Wildlife at Foster Road Allotments

Thanks to Howard Slatter for identifying the following 53 bird species at our allotments. All have been seen actually using the allotment site (including its boundary hedges).  This means either on the ground, perched, or aerial feeding overhead, not just flying through:

Blackbird, Blackcap, Blue Tit, Brambling, Bullfinch, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Collared Dove, Common Kestrel, Common Redstart, Common Swift, Common Whitethroat, Cuckoo, Dunnock, Fieldfare, Garden Warbler, Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Green Woodpecker, Greenfinch, House Martin, House Sparrow, Jackdaw, Jay, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Lesser Whitethroat, Linnet, Long-tailed Tit, Magpie, Meadow Pipit, Mistle Thrush, Pheasant, Pied Wagtail, Redpoll, Redwing, Reed Bunting, Robin, Rook, Siskin, Skylark, Song Thrush, Sparrowhawk, Starling, Swallow, Tree Sparrow, Whinchat, Willow Warbler, Wren, Yellow Wagtail, Yellowhammer

Common Snipe

And thanks to Penny MacLaughlan for identifying the following butterfly species at the site, in 2000:

Allotment: Brimstone, Clouded Yellow, Common Blue, Gatekeeper, Green-veined White, Large White, Meadow Brown, Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell, Small White, Speckled Wood

On the old railway line: Peacock, Red Admiral, Wall Holly Blue, Essex Skipper/Small Skipper (two "confusion" species: didn't get close enough to identify which)

Species identified in previous years include Orange-tip, Large Skipper and both Essex and Small Skippers.

Wild animals seen at the site include: Fox, Badger, Wood Mouse (Field Mouse), Hedgehog, Common Frog, Common Toad, Smooth Newt, Grass Snake, Muntjac Deer, Common Lizard.

And thanks to James Hanlon for reporting in 2006 the following species at Lantree Crescent, adjoining the railway cutting which is shared with the allotments: Badger, Bank Vole, Brown Argus butterfly.

Birds overflying included: Shelduck, Quail, Marsh Harrier.
