This is the traditional method of
composting on the Dogon Plateau. Organic material is gathered from the sparse bush
vegetation around the village. It's mixed with millet stems,
other vegetable waste, goat and chicken manure, on one of the many flat rocky surfaces.
The heap needs watering in the dry season. The compost is ready to use after only six
weeks -- much faster than compost made in Cambridge! The Dogon growers need plenty of compost because their intensive production yields up to three crops each year.
